Plan drainage observations and driveway use before concrete placement

An AWC owner guide to recording water paths, loads, transitions, access, removal, base, finish, cure protection, vehicle restrictions, and closeout.

Driveway work affects how people enter the property, where water is observed, and when vehicles can return. Those decisions should be made before removal or placement. A useful scope starts with actual use and visible drainage behavior, then defines the work boundary, unknown conditions, finish goal, protection plan, and authority to reopen the area.

Document use and loads first

List typical vehicles and other uses without assuming the existing slab was designed for them. Mark garage doors, gates, walkways, aprons, drains, utilities, walls, landscaping, and neighboring access. Note delivery, resident, or emergency access needs for planning. Load capacity and assembly adequacy require property-specific information; appearance and neighborhood do not establish them.

Record water behavior without assigning cause

Photograph observed ponding, runoff paths, downspout discharge, low transitions, staining, erosion, and water entering from adjoining areas. Note when the condition occurs and where the water continues. These observations help define evaluation. They do not prove the cause, subsurface drainage, soil condition, or that changing one concrete slope will resolve every connected water issue.

Set removal and access limits

The proposal should identify panels or saw-cut boundaries, haul and equipment routes, retained surfaces, utility awareness, dust and debris control, and temporary access. Confirm how gates, parked vehicles, and occupants are handled before work starts. If demolition exposes an unexpected base, buried item, or adjoining damage, require photos and written approval before the work boundary expands.

Define the new assembly and finish

State base preparation, forms, reinforcement decisions, joints, transitions, penetrations, drainage intent, placement limits, finish and traction goal, and any coating responsibility supported by the approved design. A sidewalk replacement example may illustrate removal and fresh finishing, but it does not establish a driveway assembly, vehicle capacity, cure duration, or Carmel Valley property condition.

Make return to use a controlled handoff

Before placement, assign barriers, weather response, pedestrian routing, vehicle restrictions, and communication responsibility. Reopening depends on the selected materials, conditions, design, and intended load; avoid promising a universal number of days. Closeout should record the finished limits, observed transitions, protection instructions, approval to reopen, and any drainage or adjacent work left for a separate decision.

Your planning checklist

  • List vehicles, access needs, and connected property features
  • Photograph water paths during relevant conditions when possible
  • Mark removal, staging, haul, and retained-surface limits
  • Approve base, joints, transitions, finish, and traction goals
  • Create a written changed-condition process
  • Name who protects and who authorizes reopening

Questions owners ask

Can slope be designed from photos alone?

No. Photos document visible behavior, but site conditions, elevations, connected drainage, and the approved design control the scope.

How soon can vehicles return?

There is no universal answer. The responsible plan must consider materials, conditions, design, intended loads, and project-specific direction.
